H.R. 218 (LEOSA) Qualification Overview
The H.R. 218 (LEOSA) qualification satisfies the annual qualification requirements for LEOSA qualified peace officers.
To carry concealed under H.R. 218, otherwise eligible officers must:
- Qualify annually with the type of firearm they will carry.
- Federal law defines types of firearms as handgun, shotgun, and rifle.
- Federal law does not differentiate between semi-automatic and revolver handguns.
- Federal law does not require that you list specific firearms on your H.R. 218 qualification card nor qualify with each firearm you will carry.
- Federal law defines types of firearms as handgun, shotgun, and rifle.
- Basic Firearms Training only qualifies officers with handguns.
- Carry valid agency issued photo identification.
- Carry their current qualification card showing their qualification was completed within the prior 12 months.
The qualification consists of one of the following:
- The officer’s agency course of fire if it is available to the officer, or
- A 36 round California POST course of fire.
Upon successful qualification, officers receive a qualification card. Again, when carrying your firearm, this card must be carried along with your valid agency issued photo ID.
What you’ll need for the qualification:
- Eye and ear protection
- Firearm with at least 2 magazines or speed loaders
- Ammunition required to complete your agency course of fire or 36 rounds
- State issued driver license or ID
- Agency issued ID
