This 4-hour online Chemical Agents & Tear Gas Certification course introduces students to the chemical agents commonly used or encountered in the security and law enforcement professions.

This course satisfies the training requirements set forth in California Business & Professions Code sections 7583.35 and 7583.6(b) and California Penal Code section 22835.

Completion of this course allows properly licensed security personnel to purchase, possess, and transport tear gas and tear gas weapons if used for defensive purposes in the course and scope of their licensed employment.

To be eligible to purchase, possess, and transport tear gas and tear gas weapons on duty, security professionals must:

  1. Possess proof of the completion of this course (printable at the end of the course)
  2. Possess at least one of the following Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS) licenses:
    • Private Investigator (PI)
    • Private Patrol Operator (PPO)
    • Guard Registration or “guard card” (e.g. uniformed employee of a PPO)

Course topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Types of chemical agents encountered in security and law enforcement
  • Legal aspects of chemical agents in California
  • Safe and effective use of chemical agents
  • Effects of chemical agents

To successfully complete this course, students must:

  1. Complete all lessons in the course.
  2. Pass a multiple-choice examination with a score of at least 80%.

For convenience purposes, students may save their progress in this course and return to it later. Students may also take the examination as many times as needed to pass this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to print a certificate of completion and a wallet sized certification card to carry while on duty.

Please be aware that courses not completed within 90 days of enrollment will be closed and any unfinished work will be deleted from the learning management system. Students wishing to complete the course after 90 days must re-enroll in the course and start the course over again.
