Quick facts about a Contra Costa County CCW permit
- Permit is issued by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Permit is valid for 2 years.
- You may list up to 2 firearms on your permit. Firearms must be registered in the permit holder’s name with the California Department of Justice.
- No single action only firearms, including any 1911 style semi-automatic.
- No derringers or derringer variants.
- Firearms may not include laser sights, flashlights, red dots, and sighting systems.
- Firearms may not have any modifications (from factory standard) including to triggers, slides, safety mechanisms, conversions and magazine releases.
- Firearms must hold a minimum of 5 rounds.
- Firearms modifications made after issuance of the permit may result in permit revocation.
- Initial training course is 16 hours. Renewal course is 8 hours.
- Must pass a written exam and shooting qualification for both initial and renewal courses.
- Students must draw firearm from a hip-worn holster during shooting qualification.
How to obtain an initial Contra Costa County CCW permit
- Apply online for a new CCW permit via the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Permitium page here: https://contracostaca.permitium.com/ccw/start
- Complete background investigation
- Complete Live Scan
- Complete interview with Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office will contact applicant to schedule an appointment once they receive the results of applicant’s Live Scan,
- When the CCW unit gives you the go ahead to take your training course, schedule your initial class. To register for one of our initial Contra Costa County CCW courses, Click here.
- Complete your CCW course and submit your training documents to the Sheriff’s CCW unit via their Permitium page.
- When notified by the Sheriff’s Office that your permit is available for pick up, schedule an appointment to pick up your permit. The appointment is made via the Sheriff’s Office Pertmitium page.

- Upload your training documents via the Sheriff’s Permitium page.
- Pick up your new CCW permit from the Sheriff’s Office when notified that its available for pick up.
