How to obtain and renew a Placer County CCW

Quick facts about a Placer County CCW permit

  1. Permit is issued by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
  2. Must be 21 years of age or older.
  3. Permit is valid for 2 years.
  4. 120-day grace period to renew permit after its expiration date. You may not carry a firearm until the permit is renewed.
  5. You may list up to 3 firearms on your permit. Firearms must be registered in the permit holder’s name with the California Department of Justice.
  6. Firearms must not be less than a .25 caliber and not greater than a .45 caliber.
  7. Firearm modifications allowed to enhance sighting. Includes laser sights, night sights and grip modifications.
  8. Modifications altering manufacturer’s original setting, including aftermarket optics, are prohibited.
  9. Initial training course is 16 hours. Renewal course is 8 hours.
  10. Must pass a written exam and shooting qualification for both initial and renewal courses.

How to obtain an initial Placer County CCW permit

  1. Apply online for a new CCW permit via the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Permitium page here: https://placerca.permitium.com/ccw/start
  2. When applying for the permit, you’ll need to schedule an interview with the Sheriff’s Office CCW unit.
  3. While patiently waiting for your interview appointment, routinely check back for appointment cancellations so you can reschedule for an earlier appointment.
  4. Submit proof of residency documents online at least 30 days, but no more than 90 days before your interview appointment.
  5. Attend your interview with the CCW unit.
  6. Complete your Live Scan as directed.
  7. When the CCW unit gives you the go ahead to take your training course, schedule your initial class. To register for one of our initial Placer County CCW courses, Click here
  8. Complete your CCW course and submit your training documents to the Sheriff’s CCW unit via their Permitium page.
  9. Pick up your new CCW permit from the Sheriff’s Office when notified that its available for pick up.
