H.R. 218 (LEOSA) Qualification Overview

The H.R. 218 (LEOSA) qualification satisfies the annual qualification requirements for LEOSA qualified peace officers.

To carry concealed under H.R. 218, otherwise eligible officers must:

  • Qualify annually with the type of firearm they will carry.
    1. Federal law defines types of firearms as handgun, shotgun, and rifle.
      1. Federal law does not differentiate between semi-automatic and revolver handguns.
      2. Federal law does not require that you list specific firearms on your H.R. 218 qualification card nor qualify with each firearm you will carry.
  • Basic Firearms Training only qualifies officers with handguns.
  • Carry valid agency issued photo identification.
  • Carry their current qualification card showing their qualification was completed within the prior 12 months.

The qualification consists of one of the following:

  1. The officer’s agency course of fire if it is available to the officer, or
  2. A 36 round California POST course of fire.

Upon successful qualification, officers receive a qualification card. Again, when carrying your firearm, this card must be carried along with your valid agency issued photo ID.

What you’ll need for the qualification:

  • Eye and ear protection
  • Firearm with at least 2 magazines or speed loaders
  • Ammunition required to complete your agency course of fire or 36 rounds
  • State issued driver license or ID
  • Agency issued ID
