BSIS Initial Baton Permit Course Overview

This 8-hour BSIS Baton Permit course is required for all security professionals before they carry a baton in the course and scope of their employment. This course satisfies the training requirements set forth in California Business & Professions Code section 7585.9(a).

Course topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Moral and legal aspects of baton usage.
  • Use of force.
  • Baton familiarization and uses.
  • First aid for baton injuries.
  • Fundamentals of baton handling.

Prerequisites for the class:

  1. Possess or are simultaneously applying for one of the following BSIS licenses:
    • Security Guard Registration “Guard Card”
    • Private Patrol Operator
    • Qualified Manager Private Patrol Operator

Note: BSIS Baton Permits may only be associated with one of these licenses.

To complete this course, students must:

  1. Be present for the entire course.
  2. Participate in practical exercises and adequately demonstrate baton techniques.
  3. Pass a written exam with a score of 84% and correctly identify the vital areas of the body to avoid with baton strikes.

Successful completion of this course allows appropriately licensed security professionals to apply for a Baton Permit.

What you need to bring to class:

  • Valid Driver License or State issued ID card
  • Baton (if you already possess one). The following batons are acceptable for this course:
    • Straight baton
    • Expandable straight baton
    • Side handle baton
    • Expandable side handle baton
  • Duty belt (if you already possess one) with baton holder or baton ring
  • Note taking materials
  • Safe and positive attitude and an open mind
  • Snacks / beverages / lunch

Please wear comfortable attire, including athletic shoes, as there are practical exercises in this course. No flip flops, open toe shoes, or sandals please.
