California CCW Modification Overview

This approximately 1-hour CCW modification qualification is required to add firearms to a current CCW permit before it is up for renewal.

To pass the modification, students must:

  1. Pass a shooting qualification with each firearm being added to the CCW.

At minimum, all firearms instructors are certified and/or licensed by:

  1. California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
  2. California Department of Justice (DOJ)
  3. California Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS)
  4. Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI)
  5. The National Rifle Association (NRA)

At minimum, the following law enforcement agencies accept training certificates from this course:

  • Amador County Sheriff
  • Contra Costa County Sheriff
  • Ione Police Department
  • Placer County Sheriff
  • Sacramento County Sheriff
  • San Joaquin County Sheriff
  • Sutter County Sheriff
  • West Sacramento Police Department
  • Winters Police Department
  • Woodland Police Department
  • Yolo County Sheriff

Other agencies that do not have an approved instructor list may accept this training. Please reach out to confirm if Basic Firearms Training is accepted by your issuing agency.

What to bring to the qualification:

  • Valid Driver License or state issued ID Card
  • Firearm(s) that you will qualify with*
  • At least 2 magazines or speed loaders per firearm
  • Ammunition – at least 50 rounds per firearm
  • Eye protection & Ear protection
  • Safe and positive attitude and an open mind

*Please ensure firearms are clean, lubricated, and in good working order BEFORE qualification. Firearms that continually have stoppages (malfunctions) may prevent students from passing the course of fire.
