8-hour California CCW Renewal Course Overview
This 8-hour CCW renewal course is compliant with the training requirements set forth in Senate Bill 2 and California Penal Code Section 26165. This course serves as a refresher course to the initial 16-hour course. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Firearms safety
- Safe firearm handling
- Shooting techniques
- Safe storage laws
- Legal methods to transport & secure firearms in vehicles
- CCW prohibited places
- Laws for the permissible use of a firearm
- Laws for permissible use of lethal force in self-defense
- Mental health and mental health resources
- Other applicable laws
- Stoppage (malfunction) clearing
To pass this course, students must:
- Be present for the duration of the course.
- Pass a written exam.
- Pass a shooting qualification with each firearm to be listed on the CCW.
At minimum, all firearms instructors are certified and/or licensed by:
- California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
- California Department of Justice (DOJ)
- California Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS)
- Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI)
- The National Rifle Association (NRA)
At minimum, the following law enforcement agencies accept training certificates from this course:
- Amador County Sheriff
- Contra Costa County Sheriff
- Ione Police Department
- Placer County Sheriff
- Sacramento County Sheriff
- San Joaquin County Sheriff
- Sutter County Sheriff
- West Sacramento Police Department
- Winters Police Department
- Woodland Police Department
- Yolo County Sheriff
- Yuba County Sheriff
Other agencies that do not have an approved instructor list may accept this training. Please reach out to confirm if Basic Firearms Training is accepted by your issuing agency.
What to bring to the course:
- Valid Driver License or state issued ID Card
- Firearm(s) that you will qualify with*
- At least 2 magazines or speed loaders per firearm
- Ammunition – at least 50 rounds per firearm
- Eye protection & Ear protection
- Note taking materials
- Safe and positive attitude and an open mind
*Please ensure firearms are clean, lubricated, and in good working order BEFORE class. Firearms that continually have stoppages (malfunctions) may prevent students from passing the course of fire.
